What to Pack in a DIY Cold Weather Emergency Kit

It pays to be prepared, and if you are planning on taking a car journey in the winter months, then a cold weather emergency kit could be extremely useful. It’s easy to become complacent when setting out in the car, thanks to temperature control and heated seats, but if you run into mechanical problems, you’ll be happy to be prepared. Check out DCH Millburn Audi‘s tips on what to pack in a DIY cold weather emergency kit, and make sure that you don’t get caught out.

Choosing the right container is the first step to take. The idea is to provide an emergency kit that can keep you safe for a few hours, so you don’t need anything too large. A large canvas bag will certainly be suitable, or a medium-large plastic container. If possible, keep your emergency kit inside the car with you. While the trunk might seem like a more logical place to store it, if the rear of the car is damaged, you may not be able to get to it.

Choose some warm blankets and clothing. Emergency blankets are light and inexpensive, and will help keep you warm if the heating fails. Gloves, scarves, and woolen hats should also be included. Try to make sure that your emergency kit holds enough for all the occupants of your car, and make sure it is fully packed when the whole family is going on a journey.

Your emergency kit should always carry a flashlight and batteries. You never know when you will need help finding your way, even if it is just to find items inside the car. A flashlight can also be used to signal for help. While it is normally unwise to leave the car in the event of an emergency, you may need the flashlight to help you find assistance. A small first aid kit may be required to help you tend to minor injuries, too, so make sure that you have one of these in your emergency kit as well. Ensure that it contains wet wipes, disinfectant, antiseptic, and pain relievers.

Some basic car tools may also be useful. A set of wrenches, some screwdrivers, and a booster cable for the battery are minimum requirements. Don’t underestimate the value of other items like clean cloths and a small towel and throw in a roll of duct tape. This could be useful for making a quick, temporary repair to a broken windshield.

While you’re waiting for help, you may find that you get bored, too, particularly if kids are involved. Pack some simple games to keep the kids occupied and a book or two for the adults. Drinks and snacks are likely to be very welcome, too. Choose long-life sweets and snacks that won’t go stale, and don’t be afraid to discard healthy eating principles for once. Sugary foods help keep energy levels up and may boost otherwise depressed moods. Ensure that you have plenty of drinking water as well. A large bottle of water may be required for drinking or for cleaning up other parts of the car.

Aftermarket Trends: Wheels

When it comes to making your vehicle look its best, don’t overlook the importance of a sweet set of wheels. If you ask, the DCH Millburn Audi team can help you take advantage of the latest trends.

Chrome is no longer the bling of choice. Way back in the 90s, bling was the thing, and the brighter the chrome on the wheels, the cooler the guy or gal driving would be. It wasn’t just rappers in music videos, like Wu-Tang Clan, sporting them either, although the wheels on the bus—the ones that go round and round— never quite caught on to the trend. According to the Specialty Equipment Marketing Association (SEMA), chrome wheels no longer dominate the market. The association asserts that “painted wheels are becoming more prevalent, and seemingly every wheel company now offers some variation on that theme.” If you’re looking to upgrade your wheel style, there’s sure to be an expert here who can match your vehicle with the perfectly colored wheels.

These aftermarket trends are sure to turn a head or two. Concave and colored wheels are an increasingly trendy option in today’s wheel market. Other notable trends, according to SEMA, include two-color wheels, larger sized wheels, and the ability to mix and match. Advances in manufacturing have led to a larger variety of styles on the market, “including painted, plated, machined and clear-coated products in high volumes with low and mid-range price points.”

The market is driven by three primary factors. Practicality, cost, and process complexity drive the wheel aftermarket. For that reason, steel and aluminum alloy wheels grab a large share of sales. These three things, however, shouldn’t minimize the importance of other factors, factors that include style and fit. In other words, you’re probably looking for a practical, affordable, well-made wheel that makes people give you and your vehicle a second look when they see you drive by. Chances are with today’s emerging technologies; it’s easier than ever to deck your car out with an affordable set of eye-catching wheels.

Although shiny chrome is no longer the hot look in wheels, the look of a new set of wheels on your vehicle is still hot. And if you like the shiny chrome look, just like any trend that look will be back some day. In the mean time, if you’re looking to stay in style, start sassin’ up your ride with less chrome, and more color and paint accents.

Setting Up Shop: Audi Moves Racing Headquarters

Audi driving dynamics NeuburgAt DCH Millburn Audi, we are big fans of the Audi racing team. We are excited to share that Audi Sport will be moving from its Ingolstadt, Germany headquarters (located in an old supermarket) to a brand-new location.

After some 20 years of planning paired with two years of construction, the state-of-the-art facility covers 116 acres and is located in Neuburg, roughly 12 miles west of the original site. The complex will house engineers, technicians, and other brilliant minds that handle the R18 E-Tron Quattro, the RS5 DTM and the R8 LMS Ultra. Audi Neuburg was opened last month by an official ceremony attended by top Audi executives, the board of management and local political representatives.

Audi is best known for its Le Mans team that has continued to be a front-runner in the endurance racing scene. It also competes in the FIA World Endurance Championship and the popular DTM touring car series. As of now, the works team has begun the move and the customer racing department is set to make the transition in the first half of 2015. DCH Millburn Audi is excited to see what these new headquarters will bring. Unfortunately, we don’t have these show-stopping cars on our lot, but we do have the next best thing. Check out our current inventory today.
